2024 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowships
This week, the National Endowment for the Arts celebrates Jazz Masters award recipients for this year's ceremony to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Pianist Amina Claudine Myers, saxophonist Gary Bartz, trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard, and writer Willard Jenkins are selected for next year's Fellowships, and we'll hear music and anecdotes from each jazz master all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.


April 9 - 14

Jazz Poetry Week and National Poetry Month
This week co-host, 作者, 诗人, and educator Jim LaVilla-Havelin joins us for Jazz Poetry Week on the Jazz Break at Noon. We'll explore the intersection between jazz and the spoken word with a variety of live guests, 诗人, and musicians, while delving into their creative processes, inspirations, and influences, along with recordings of performances from history's greatest jazz 诗人.


April 22 - 26

Tenor Saxophone Titan Joe Henderson
Born in Lima, OH, on April 24, 1937, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson maintained a prolific output for Blue Note Records in the mid 1960's, with over thirty recordings as a leader and collaborator. More recordings on Milestone, 神韵, and other labels followed, with Henderson's raw, 健壮的, and distinct sound stretching out beyond bebop to R&B, Latin, and avant garde territory into the late 1990's.


April 29 - May 3

Celebrating International Jazz Day
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declares April 30 as International Jazz Day "to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe." Join us this week as we feature bandleaders and their recordings from several countries and cultures from around the globe, with International Jazz Day creator Herbie Hancock as a starting point.
